Background and Production
Writing
The novel Aangan was written by Khadija Mastoor in 1962, and
won the Adamji Literacy Award in the same year. It was also translated into 13
languages. The director, Ehteshamuddin, was most interested in partition,
"It was initially thought out as a film but now we're making a play out of
it," he told The News International in a March 2017 interview, "We
might turn it into a film later." He chose Mustafa Afridi to write the
screenplay and Afridi worked on the story for more than a year before filming
commenced. While the original novel is set in the 1940s and 1950s, DAWN
Images reported in December 2017 that the drama is planned as a three-part
series spanning a number of decades and will also feature the story of the
1980s and 2000s as continuity. In a January 2018 interview the director
praised the simplicity of the novel on which the production is based, saying;
"It sheds light on the revolution that women went through in those
times", and "Set in an inner courtyard, the story has been told from
the perspective of a woman."
Casting
On 17 October 2017, it was reported that Mawra Hocane had
signed up for the project. On 19 October, it was reported that Ahsan Khan
had also signed up, along with Sajal Aly and Ahad Raza Mir. On 4 November,
Sonya Hussain signed up for the project, completing the lead cast. Other cast
in supporting roles include Abid Ali and Zaib Rehman; who will play the parents
of Ahsan's character; along with Omair Rana and Uzma Hassan. It was also
revealed that Ahsan will be playing a double role.
Ahsan said in an interview with The Express Tribune, "I
haven't done anything after Chupan Chupai, Rehbaraa and Ishq. MD Productions
and Ehtesham were my biggest attraction towards it and I loved Mustafa Afridi's
Sang-e-Mar Mar, who is now doing the screenplay for Aangan. I found the
combination great." Sonya said, "I think in some bizarre way, I
relate to the world that Aangan is set in […] I've never extensively worked
with him before, but [Ehtesham is] truly one of our finest directors."
Filming
The shooting for the drama began on 7 November 2017 with
Ahsan, Sonya and Ahad. Sajal confirmed her shoot on 5 December, while Mawra on 27 December. The first spell was completed in January 2018.
